Two things go wrong when Buffalo drops below zero: a pipe stops running, or the furnace stops. The pipe steps follow American Red Cross guidance on thawing frozen pipes. The furnace steps are the basic checks any homeowner can make.
Water trickles or stops
Frozen pipe
- Leave the faucet open. Water moving through the pipe helps melt the ice.
- Warm the frozen section with a hair dryer, a heating pad wrapped around the pipe, or towels soaked in hot water.
- Keep open flame away. No blowtorch, propane or kerosene heater, or charcoal stove.
- Keep warming until full pressure returns. If you cannot find or reach the frozen spot, or it will not thaw, call (763) 682-1581.
- Pipe already split or water spraying: close the main water valve, then call.
House is getting cold
Furnace will not run
- Check the thermostat. It should be set to heat, above the room temperature, with fresh batteries if it takes them.
- Check power to the furnace. The switch near the unit is on and the breaker has not tripped.
- Look at the filter. A clogged filter can shut a furnace down.
- Still nothing: call the shop and say what you see and hear.
- Smell gas: leave the building first, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
General homeowner steps. They do not replace a service visit.
